This year’s CIS COAL SUMMIT took place against a backdrop of decline in the global coal market. However, in 2009 our conference, once again, proved itself to be a highly successful platform for debate and networking for like-minded industry professionals

CIS COAL SUMMIT IN 2009 AT A GLANCE:

Eduard Smelov, Vice President, Head of Trading Division, Integrated Energy Systems, presented an overview of Russia’s energy policy and the prognosis for the fuel balance in Russian electricity in coming years

Oleg Pertsovsky, Head of Strategy, Risk-Management and Corporate Development Department, SUEK predicted that the competition on the international coal market will increase in the immediate future, and recommended the Russian companies to solve this problem by reducing costs and expanding into Asia 

Dominique Fache, Country Manager and Chief Operations Officer for Russia, Enel, Chairman of the Board Directors, OGK-5 spoke about their corporate coal policy   

Giorgio Ruscito, Managing Director, Fuelmed Italy analysed the Italian energy mix, coal market evolution, new energy players and new entrants into coal-fired power generation

John Warwick, Managing Director, IMC Montan analysed the increased coal production capacity in the UK and its impact on the CIS coal exports

Not surprisingly, most of the CIS Coal Summit presentations were focused on strategies for surmounting the global financial turmoil. Even though the industry is in decline at the moment, many conference speakers were quite optimistic about the future of Russian mining. 

There is no doubt that our Summit generated not only plenty of valuable discussion but also provided highly beneficial networking opportunities (such as our panel discussions as well as round tables - hosted this year by SUEK, Raspadskaya and Troika Dialog) for the top-level representatives of the biggest coal companies

Our delegates praised this year’s Summit for being an “informal”, “well-organised” “platform for getting the latest news” and for “meeting market professionals”

The next 5^th Annual CIS Coal Summit is scheduled to take place in Moscow in June 2010 and we look forward to seeing you at this event when, hopefully, the Russian economy will show some significant signs of recovery!
